This is our trip report from our sailfish baitball expedition off Isla Mujeres, Mexico...I hope you enjoy it.
This trip always makes me nervous because its a natural encounter and those are always the hardest, because you just never know what mother ocean is going to give you. Sailfish chasing baitballs is a crap shoot. These trips are always weather dependant. You need the right water conditions so the sardines arrive - no sardines, means no sailfish. You need sunny skies so that the birds can find the fish. The frigate birds is how we find sailfish. The birds take advantage of the sailfish pushing the sardines to the surface, which is how we find the sailfish, so if you have too much cloud coverage, it means the birds hav trouble finding the fish, so that they can drop down and grab a free snack. Anyway, all this is important to have a successful trip. Well this is our 3rd season chasing sailfish and I am happy to report we were very successful.
This is the story of our 6 days in and on the water and the great people who joined us out there. As I have been doing for the past few adventures, I have been video blogging about what we are up to - to share what went on under the ocean, as well as topside.
