PORBEAGLE SHARK-SAT TAGGING ADVENTURE
AUGUST 1-3, 2008
In August 2007, the editor of SDM, and staff photographer Andy Murch, went out to the Bay of Fundy, Canada to seek out the rare porbeagle shark. In three days, three sharks were spotted and one was tagged and photographed (article and images were published in issue # 16 of SDM). The images were some of the very first captured underwater of this rare and endangered shark. This adventure is so unique and special, that we decided to go back with our readers in 2008 to try it again. The goal this time is to satelite tag, 2 sharks. Very little is known about the porbeagle shark, all that is known for sure is that these sharks are in trouble. They have been fished to the brink of extinction. So SDM, along with the readers who join us, are going to do our part to help in the protection of these sharks. The information these sat tags gather, will be used by Dr Turnbull, of the Canadian Shark Conservation Society (CSCS) to help create laws to protect these sharks. (Dr. Turnbull will be joining us for the adventure.) A percentage of the proceeds will go back into helping to purchase the tags we need for the expedition. Space on this trip is very limited, so if you would like to join us for this Historic shark diving/tagging Expedition, let us know...
