I WAS TALKING to a friend of mine and we were bantering back and forth about Gulf of Mexico diving. I was saying that it was some of the best diving in the world, but she disagreed with me. We ended up agreeing that the Gulf is a great place for big animal encounters but there are better places for scuba diving. We then got into the best way to interact with big animals there. I told her that snorkeling was one of the best ways to interact with them; she then told me that she hated snorkeling but loved scuba diving. I have heard so many people tell me the exact same thing, they hate snorkeling, but they love scuba. Why is snorkeling such a hated activity among scuba divers? Why is dropping down into the belly of the ocean better than swimming at the surface? I guess it all boils down to why we dive.
To a regular diver, scuba diving is a sport, and it's all about dropping down and seeing what's around. But to a Shark Diver, scuba diving is a tool, one of many we use to encounter sharks. A Shark Diver doesn't really care what's used to encounter a shark, whether it's a snorkel, scuba diving, rebreather, or a submarine. And it doesn't matter how; it could be an organized shark feed, chumming, an aquarium, natural encounter, or a deep water sub ride. It could even be from an accidental gill netting- Remember the rare shark pulled up in a gill net back in the late 80's? Those lucky divers are still the only people to have ever seen a megamouth shark alive. My point is scuba divers just want to go diving, anywhere, any time; as long as they are on scuba. Shark Divers just want to see sharks, and will do whatever it takes to see them. No matter how far, no matter how cold, no matter how gnarly.
It's all about the sharks...period!
